Gran Canaria is dressed in purple
The Canary Island sage flowers carpet broad swathes of the summit such as Montañón Negro and other areas of the island.
Chameleon-like Gran Canaria is constantly changing colour. Canary Island sage flowers dress ravines and hillsides in a glorious purple. This stunning, long robe begins 1,800 metres above sea level and trails practically down to the coast. Its bright colour stands out against the black background of the volcanic ash on the foothills of Montañón Negro, one of the most recent volcanoes on the island.
Canary Island sage is both delicate and hardy. The stalks and the underside of the leaves on this bush are covered with a soft down that traps the humidity and helps it withstand periods of drought, bestowing its flowering beauty, even in places on Gran Canaria which hardly see any rain throughout the year.
Its adaptability explains how far it has spread. Its versatility can also be seen in the variety of colours on its flowers, ranging through different intensities of white, pink and violet tones. This is directly related to the soil properties and the weather conditions in each particular area, giving the same plant different clothing as a nod to the very essence and generous biodiversity of Gran Canaria.
Bright colour occasionally emerges from the darkness and Canary Island sage is a good example of this. Its seeds are black, dark like the Montañón Negro cloak or the soil that covers wide areas of the Tamadaba pine forest or close to Artenara. Its fragrance and bright colours attract bees, eventually providing honey that manages to condense this landscape. Its power of attraction also fascinates anyone who comes across it on their path.
The Latin root of its name refers to health and this is more than purely linguistic. Tradition has bestowed multiple healing and antiseptic properties on this plant, used to make tea that would calm a fever or improve digestion and ulcers, and to cure superficial wounds or soothe painful feet. Keep an eye out for our healthy sage.
