Gran Canaria offers visitors to Teror a new benchmark history and information space

The town of Teror, in Gran Canaria, has a new Visitors’ Centre right in its old town centre, located in the newly refurbished building known as ‘Casa de Los Alvarado’, opposite the Basílica del Pino.

Under the brand of ‘Teror te deja huella’ (Teror makes its mark), this beautiful building has become a beacon for the thousands of visitors and tourists who come to explore Teror every day. These facilities will provide a Tourist Information Office, permanent and temporary exhibition rooms, plus meeting and presentation facilities.

The permanent exhibition explores the town of Teror, including its water culture, farming, natural and historic heritage, sports, cuisine, festivals, the early days of its tourism and its local traditions, using documentary and audiovisual supports.

However, this building dates back well over a century to 1878, when it was built for the Alvarado family. One year later, its construction was declared to be complete in the Plaza del Pino, opposite the church façade, and alongside the homes of outstanding families not only from Teror, but from other towns in Gran Canaria. This mansion’s imposing height and great size drew so much attention that it has been widely photographed and often features on postcards.

The Teror Town Council bought this historical building in 1963, already home to the ‘Doctor’s House’ on the top floor, where Dr Eduardo Vallejo lived with his family. The ground floor of this building was intended for various uses, including the well-known Bar Americano (whose fried fish and meat snacks were popular throughout the island), the Miguel Peña Haberdashery, Agustin de Rosario’s shop and some municipal services. It is interesting that one of the first petrol pumps was located on the outside of this building, alongside the transport stop known as the ‘Coches de hora’ station.
