Sustainability finds a home in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has been awarded the demanding ‘Biosphere Destination’ seal, also earning a spot in the top fifteen European destinations with the most certified accommodation.

Gran Canaria takes care of you and itself. The island embraces its primary sector and invites us all to eat local produce. It also raises awareness on responsible water use and caring for natural resources, from its oceans and beaches to its forests and summits. These are examples of a global commitment which implicates not only public administrations but also the private sector. For a while now, all Gran Canaria’s paths have been leading to the same place: the need to be an increasingly sustainable tourist destination.

Los Charcones (natural swimming pools), Arucas, Gran Canaria

Los Charcones: words spoken by the sea

The area of Bañaderos, at the north of Gran Canaria, is world a away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

“Look at that, they’re happy enough now!”. The boy is talking about the fish feeding on bread crumbs that he has just thrown into the water for them, and which have disappeared in a matter of seconds. The only thing left now under this transparent marine canvass is a group of cabosos, lisas and other expectant little fish. But the lad has already gone back to his parents, who have forgot all about the time at this huge solarium, measuring over two thousand square metres that stretches out to the edge of the natural pools at Bañaderos, in Arucas, along the stunning north coast of Gran Canaria.

The Beethoven piano in the inside of the Benito Pérez Galdós House Museum

Echos of Beethoven in Gran Canaria

The Pérez Galdós House Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria reflects the intense relationship between the writer and music.

There is a place where two geniuses live side by side. One of the greatest Spanish writers of all times, Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The house museum that is located in the very building he grew up in, in calle Cano, is home to the writer’s piano, and provides an insight into what a fan he was of music and how much he used to enjoy playing.

Two people star-gazing in Gran Canaria

Star-gazing in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is an exceptional viewpoint for astronomical observation. Photographs taken of the Milky Way are a fine example of this.

This tale has several protagonists, and two settings that are situated huge distances  from one another. And it develops at very different times. But finally, the pieces slot in together almost magically in a quick flash. The elements link up in the internal mechanism of a single tale which highlights the positioning of Gran Canaria as a window to the Universe, thanks to its excellent conditions for star gazing.

Beach in La Aldea. Gran Canaria

In La Aldea for good

The new tunnel on the road to La Aldea now provides access to one of the most beautiful outposts in Gran Canaria.

Your car moves along between two towering cliffs that make you feel both small and fortunate at the same time. If you are coming in from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and have just passed Agaete, there is a huge expanse of blue ocean to your right. On the other side, a range of cliffs rise up –or plunge downwards, depending on how you look at it- and give way to steep ravines from time to time that open out into the sea. That’s right, the road that opens up in La Aldea de San Nicolás is a procession of kilometres of stunning beauty.
