The San Martín Centro de Cultura Contemporánea is a dynamic forum within the island?s cultural scene, and has a leading role as a catalyst for artistic production, both for the Canary Islands and the rest of the world. The centre puts on temporary exhibitions in its spacious art galleries as well as laying on activities linked with literature, the performing arts and other new creative forms, as well as music, with regular live concerts held in its main patio playing host to jazz, rock, acoustic and classical artists, both solo and bands.
The San Martín Centro de Cultura Contemporánea is located in the Vegueta district of town and has been witness to the finest moments in the city?s historical past over the last couple of centuries. The building was initially envisaged as a hospital, and was opened as such in 1786. It later became a maternity hospital, hospice and was even used as a prison during the Spanish Civil War. This centre has recently been restored and is currently the only remaining welfare centre of its kind left in the city. From an architectural point of view, it is considered a truly beautiful building, set around two patios, and featuring a central chapel, and a porch with rounded arches.
