The Arinaga volcanic cone is of geomorphological interest and is a landmark in the landscape of the SE coast of Gran Canaria. It forms part of a more extensive semi-natural area where endangered endemic species of flora and fauna are found. These include the Atlantic lizard (Gallotia atlantica delibesi). The Arinaga area is the only locality where this subspecies is found and it constitutes the largest population on the island of Gran Canaria.
