The reserve offers a beautiful mountain landscape with some spectacular geomorphological elements, such as the Marteles caldera or crater or the phonolitic rock of the Risco Blanco amongst others. The entire area plays an important role in maintaining essential ecological processes such as replenishing water table levels- large reception basins are located in the ravines of San Bartolomé, Tenteniguada, Temisas, etc. It has an ample variety of habitats the most noteworthy of which are the wild olive groves and the forests of willows of the Cernícalos ravine and the abundant crags that are found right across the entire area. There is great biodiversity in endemic vegetation of great scientific interest to be found on its slopes (on the cliffs of Paso de la Plata alone more than 50 endemic plants have been recorded).
