Palmitos Park Maspalomas

Suricates are little mammals, always prowling around and on the lookout, constantly surveying the African flatlands that surround the dens where they live. Stunning bespectacled alligators slither around in search of prey at swamps and lakes in Mexico and Central America. Clownfish sport bright colours in oceans all around the world, from the Red Sea to Sri Lanka, passing through Hawaii. All of these, along with plenty more fascinating species, can be marvelled at on a daily basis at one single venue: Palmitos Park de Maspalomas, in Gran Canaria.

Palmitos Park

Palmitos Park is like a window to the natural wonders of the world that is open under the lovely warming sun at the south of Gran Canaria. This site also offers a wide range of facilities and shows, and will guarantee an unforgettable day out for the whole family. It is possible for visitors to obtain a 2-Park Ticket, with entry here and for Aqualand Maspalomas, representing huge savings. Getting to Palmitos Park is a straightforward job, while leaving is a much taller order, as visitors will want to hang on and on…

Nature is the star of the show and raises the curtain every single day in Palmitos Park, with several different shows that offer a shower of sensations by sea, land and air. A large amphitheatre looks out over a pool where dolphins will display great agility and intelligence with back-flips that will take the audience’s breath away. The same goes for the parrot shows, plus performances by birds of prey, other exotic birds, all of which are included in the cost of entry.

Now everything turns blue and a soft light descends on us. We breathe in and dive under the depths of the world, almost literally. The Palmito Park aquarium features an area dedicated to the aquatic life resident in a fresh water environment, treating visitors to some weird and wonderful species such as the surgeon fish and scorpion fish, both of which are highly poisonous, alongside a huge, dazzling array of extravagant shapes and colour combinations.

Then suddenly total silence descends, accompanied by stunning beauty. One beauty that moves around while the other stays enigmatically still. The former belongs to the hundreds of butterflies flying fleely around. The latter belongs to the largest collection of orchids in the Canaries, with dozens of varieties from tropical regions and Australia. This is a spot for unwinding and for contemplating the capacity of nature to wow us and leave us gobsmacked. Indeed, there are no words to properly describe the flight of a butterfly or the hypnotic swaying of an orchid.

Palmitos Park

And what’s that sound? It’s the flapping of wings. We are now at an aviary, an area packed full of colours where we are treated to a close up of the flight and behaviour of many different types of birds. Here exotic birds make up a real rainbow of colour with their feathers, whilst pelicans haughtily peck about in the lake, alongside storks. Mammals include coatis, from South America, playing around with some wallabies – a kind of marsupial- who amaze us with their huge, long hopping stride. Life can be seen to be moving and bouncing all around us.

We’re now moving along as slow as a tortoise, moving stealthily like lizards. There are two which are of particular interest. The Komodo dragon and the Canary lizard, the latter being an endemic species to Gran Canaria and an example of the huge range of biodiversity on the island. Both creatures seem to be looking piercingly right through us, leaving their indelible mark on our visit to Palmitos Park.
